It’s probably pretty inevitable that moving to a new country by yourself will change you, but I never expected it to happen so quickly or in such a huge way. Over the past month I’ve seen myself grow as a person and have allowed my mind and the way in which I view the world to change immensely. After experiencing new things, embracing new cultures, and meeting so many new people from around the world, I’ve started to meet myself. I’ve come across these few quotes since I’ve started traveling and they’ve really stuck out to me. As the weekend approaches I figured I would share a few, we're almost there people, just one more day. (It's actually already the weekend for me, Friday classes don't exist in Spain)
“We get so worried about being pretty. Let’s be pretty funny, pretty smart, pretty strong.”
-Anonymous
Like so many others, I’ve experienced a huge struggle with body image and self esteem over the past few months, starting before I left for Spain. While it's hard to admit, I think many people go through similar struggles, and this quote is a perfect reminder that what we see on the outside is only skin deep.
“Know your goals, what you love, your morals, your needs, your standards, what you will not tolerate and what you are willing to die for . . .”
-Beyonce
Am I basic because this quote is from Beyonce? If so, oh well. My life has been put back into focus since I’ve arrived in Spain, and I’ve started to discover the things that are truly important to me. I think that knowing what you stand for is a huge part of who you are.
“They say that people teach what they need to learn.”
-Gretchen Rubin in “The Happiness Project”
I needed a book to read here and found the happiness project. I figured it would be a good one since it seems to go along with my journey abroad. I came across this while reading and loved it instantly.
“Travel not to find yourself, but to remember who you’ve been all along.”

Before I left for Spain I was in a bit of a tough place, and seemed to be losing sight of who I wanted to be and the things I wanted to accomplish. The stress of daily life in the U.S. sort of wore me down, but after coming here I’ve realized how important my goals have always been to me, and how important it is to chase them relentlessly. I’ve always known that I’ve wanted to be a broadcast journalist, but sort of backed off after being told what a tough field it would be. Well, someone has to do it, and I realize now there’s no reason it can’t be me. Likewise, I’ve always wanted to live in NYC, and after taking the leap to come here, I know I won’t be afraid to pursue that dream later on. There will always be someone telling you you can't do or be something, but the most important voice to listen to is your own.
“Travel far enough, you meet yourself.”
-David Mitchell
This one pretty much contradicts the last one, but in my case, and I think in many cases, they both apply. I’m on a journey to find myself, while staying true to the person I’ve always been, and for some reason, getting far away opens your eyes in millions of unexplainable ways.
Hope that was enough motivation and mushy sentimental stuff to get you through to the weekend! I’m off to Granada where a free tapa comes with every drink you order . . looks like I’ll be paying for my dinner in Rioja wine! Be on the lookout for postcards from Granada next week!
